I recently took my car in for a routine oil change and tire rotation, and of course, the mechanic sent me a list of pricey things my car needed in addition to an oil change and tire rotation.

What I didn’t realize before going into the dealer, is that they perform a check of all the systems, parts, and any other car things that should be looked at regularly. I will admit that while I have a basic working knowledge of cars, it largely goes way over my head.

The file sent to me contained a check list of items that needed to be completed as soon as possible, a couple things to plan for in the next year or so, and a list of everything that came back with no issues. But it also contained detailed descriptions and videos that explained why each piece was important.

While I most definitely did not want to hear the prognosis and final bill amount, the thoroughness of the report and the attention to detail that the mechanic gave was ultimately what I needed to hear.

When I called to ask a million questions about it, they walked me through how long I could wait on each item before it was dangerous, and what the suggested bare minimum maintenance would suffice. This aided me in being able to understand the big picture. I ended up making the decision to get new tires (which I had secretly known needed replaced), an alignment, and new brakes. It wasn’t more than two weeks later when we got a winter storm and the roads were less than fun to drive on. I was so glad I didn’t have to worry about whether my tires would have enough traction, or whether my brakes would be in good enough condition.

Thoroughness is one of our Guidemarks at Funds For Learning, in a way we are the “mechanic” to a form that needs to be tweaked, or offering guidance on staying compliant to E-rate rules and regulations. We offer our clients full scope of the tasks ahead of them, why each is important, and walk them through how much time they will need to plan for each stage. Think of us as your E-rate check engine warning light!
